Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Symptoms, Treatment, Remedies

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is a disorder that affects those who have just had a traumatic experience. This experience is anything life-changing, that causes flashbacks or anxiety with anything connected to what happened. Some examples include veterans who were in war, a rape victim, death, or natural disasters. The list goes on.

Trauma does not always equate to PTSD. The most important thing is how one processes the trauma; however, if you suspect that you or a loved one could be suffering from it, contact your doctor immediately to schedule an appointment. Untreated Posttraumatic Stress Disorder can negatively affect your life if you allow it to continually get worse. It can lead to heart disease, depression, and even suicide.

Symptoms of PTSD

There are three major things to look for in someone who may have PTSD:

  1. Re-experiencing the event
Flashbacks and nightmares are signs that you are not processing the trauma in a healthy way. Although it is understandable to be distressed when you are reminded, this should not continue for a prolonged amount of time.
  2. Avoiding the event
In the beginning, no one wants to bring up the event in fear that they may cause unnecessary stress; however, complete suppression is not okay. Deliberately trying to mask or numb your feelings to forget, especially if you get to a point where you may be taking drugs or alcohol to escape, is also not okay. It is important to talk to a trained professional if you are afraid of judgment. They are there to help you.
  3. Increased emotional arousal
If you can’t sleep and can’t control your anger, take a step back and wonder out loud, Am I overreacting? If you are irritable, it is important to take of your number one: yourself.
